How Many Times Do We Need an Assumption to Prove a Tautology in Minimal Logic: An Example on the Compression Power of Classical Reasoning

چکیده

In this article we present a class of formulas φn, n ∈ Nat, that need at least 2 assumption occurrences to be proved in a normal proof in Natural Deduction for purely implicational minimal propositional logic. In purely implicational classical propositional logic, with Peirce’s rule, each φn is proved with only one assumption occurrence in Natural Deduction in a normal proof. Besides that, the formulas φn have exponentially sized proofs in cut-free Sequent Calculus. In fact 2 is the lower-bound for normal proofs in ND and cut-free Sequent proofs. We briefly discuss the consequences of the existence of this class of formulas for designing automatic proof-procedures based on these deductive systems.

When Do We Feel Sorry for Others? : An Externality of Lake Use as an Example

The purpose of the study was to verify, through the use of an experimental method, the assumption that the ‘economic human’ pays more attention to the externality he/she causes as the strength of externality increases. We used a social-experiment design within an undergraduate classroom to test assumptions, using statistical method. A lakeside plant was used as an example. Our results confirmed...

An Executive Approach Based On the Production of Fuzzy Ontology Using the Semantic Web Rule Language Method (SWRL)

Today, the need to deal with ambiguous information in semantic web languages is increasing. Ontology is an important part of the W3C standards for the semantic web, used to define a conceptual standard vocabulary for the exchange of data between systems, the provision of reusable databases, and the facilitation of collaboration across multiple systems. However, classical ontology is not enough ...

Truth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics

The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...

Neoliberalism 4.0: The Rise of Illiberal Capitalism; Comment on “How Neoliberalism Is Shaping the Supply of Unhealthy Commodities and What This Means for NCD Prevention”

Neoliberal logic and institutional lethargy may well explain part of the reason why governments pay little attention to how their economic and development policies negatively affect health outcomes associated with the global diffusion of unhealthy commodities. In calling attention to this the authors encourage health advocates to consider strategies other than just regu...

Language Education Policy in Developing Nations from Colonization to Postcolonialism

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the role that colonization played in language education policy and illustrate the need for first language instruction. Using postcolonial scholar Franz Fanon, the reasons for and consequences of using a second language medium of instruction in postcolonial nations are explored. Colonial languages were used to reinforce the imperialistic goals of ...
